Kids for Life

Nestle' Foods The Kids for Life project, first launched on Prize Day, reached its culmination at St Austin's Academy with a Fun Day and Car Wash on Saturday 30th October. The students and teachers were involved in manning the car wash and various stalls to raise food in an attempt to offset some of the problems posed by famine in Kenya.

Working with Pembe Flour Mills Ltd., Kenya Seeds and Nestle', St. Austin's, through the Kids for Life project, set out to provide food to deal with the immediate effects of famine and to provide seeds so that, once the drought is over the people affected can get back to generating food and income as quickly as possible.

A number of people and institutions had already made generous donations even before the 30th . These include Dr. Nelson who gave 100 bags of unga and Pembe Flour Mills who gave 110 bales. Kids for Life was also given great publicity by Kiss FM.

The Fun Day and Car Wash began at 9am and lasted until 5pm. Even after 5 there were still vehicles being washed. Whether it was by painting faces, manning the bouncing castle or else by washing saloons, pick-ups and even two lorries the teachers and staff managed to raise over 230,000 shillings worth of food. Special credit must go to Twiga House since Twiga by itself raised the equivalent of 100 bales of maize flour.

The staff at St. Austin's was extremely grateful for the support received from the parents and the local community who made an extremely valuable contribution to this event. St. Austin's Academy has as part of its vision statement a commitment to corporate social responsibility and the Kids for Life project was a striking example of this commitment.

We are confident that we have created a strong awareness among our students about some of the contemporary problems facing Kenya. We are also sure they learnt that they could make a valuable contribution towards resolving such problems.

To date the project has raised over 20 tonnes of food or its equivalent in seeds. Donations are still coming in.
